This natural skin moisturizer is good for most all skin types and helps protect he skin from drying out….especially while we sleep. The nice thing about olive oil moisturizer is that it’s inexpensive and does not have an overpowering smell as some homemade moisturizers do.
If you do decide use to olive oil as a night time moisturizer, be sure to buy a quality brand and one that’s not exposed to the light – like in glass jars. Since this oil will last much longer (because you use less) than your olive oil for cooking, it has a higher chance of becoming oxidize and rancid. Storing it in a glass jar allows light to penetrate and will speed the oxidation process. So whenever possible try to purchase pure, organic/extra virgin or light olive oil in the smallest tin you can find.
How To Apply Olive Oil Moisturizer
Always apply to freshly cleansed skin and try to apply while your skin is still a little damp. Just pore a tiny amount into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together to spread it out. Then gently pat your entire face from forehead all the way down to your neck and don’t forget your chest too. This area is often overlooked, but show your age very quickly if not taken care of.Homemade Moisturizer Masks – Olive Oil Moisturizer
For extra dry skin or just to pamper yourself once in a while consider making homemade moisturizer masks using olive oil.Olive Oil Pineapple Mask - This is a great mask to not only hydrate the skin but naturally exfoliate dead skin cells and clean out your pores. Pineapple contains bromeliad which is a natural digestive enzyme and will help “eat” away all the dead skin cells and dirt. Pineapple is also has great anti-inflammatory properties so it’s good to use on acne prone skin.
To make the mask combine the following:
- 1 cup of pineapple chunks. Make sure to rinse off the syrup first.
- Then apply 3-4 tablespoons of olive oil
- You can mash the pineapple chunks with a fork or even better put every into a blender and blend until smooth.
- Then apply the mask to your face, neck, and chest and lie down and rest for 20 minutes or so.
- Then rinse very well – this is best to do before a shower – and pat dry.
Olive Oil Moisturizer – Day Time Alternative
While olive oil moisturizer is a great natural skin moisturizer for the nighttime, it’s much too greasy to use during the day – especially if you have oily skin or during hot summer months. However, if you’re like me you probably have a hard time finding a good hydrating moisturizer that’s perfect to use during the or under makeup.I’ve been disappointed with many of the moisturizers on the market today because they either have poor ingredients -- like cheap oil and water leaving you with greasy skin and clogged pores. Or they're loaded with chemicals whose name I can’t even pronounce let alone know what they are for. But I do know many companies use chemicals in their moisturizers to help preserve and extend shelf life.
And from the research I’ve done I found that some of these chemical might even be dangerous. One recent study I came across suggested that chemicals found in some common moisturizers might cause skin cancer. In this study, researcher from Rutgers University exposed hairless mice to UVB light to mimic normal sun exposure. After the exposure, the mice were treated with four popular moisturizers.
